DR. B. BUGGS BLOOD is our hero. Bugsy to his pals, he’s a dung beetle mad scientist who lives in a castle built from odd bits of trash, surrounded by a moat of swill. A bug-eyed Peter Lorre caricature, he tries to act menacing and maniacal, but he’s really just a kindhearted guy who does the right thing while constantly
protesting that it’s against his “badder instincts.” Because he’s a dung beetle, he’s always rolling a ball of dung around with his hind legs. While he uses his dung ball for various things – a basketball, a worry bead, a door stop, etc. - he’s usually unconscious of it. When asked about it, he gets incredibly defensive - “It’s just a dung ball, a harmless compulsion. I can quit any time!” Dr. Buggs frequently, maniacal rants about “taking over the world” - or at least “taking over the immediate vicinity” - are just a bluff. He generally winds up using his silly science to help his pals. He’s the proverbial one-eyed bug in the land of the blind. As silly as he can be, his childlike pals are absolutely clueless. Despite their monstrous appearances, they are more likely to scare themselves than anyone else THE LEECHER - is a leech version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. He’s a total suck up (pun intended) and mooch. His heart’s in the right place, but he’s a devout coward who runs for cover in a heartbeat.
THE PHANTOM - is a moth Phantom of the Opera, whose patterned wings form a ghostly death mask. He’s always bursting into song, usually at the wrong time.

MANTISTEIN - is a preying mantis Frankenstein whom Dr. Blood reanimated by stitching together parts of dead bugs scraped off car windshields. His brain is literally mush. He’s a good man, but he’s not quite right in the head. A voracious carnivore, he often has to be kept from eating the others by Dr. B, who distracts him with various treats he secretly makes from his dung ball.
FLY GUY - is a fly with a handsome human head whom the gang helped escape from the spider at the end of a certain famous horror movie (“Help me! Help me!”). Sitting on his pile of poo, he still dreams of making it big in Hollywood and is constantly sending out his headshot.
SLASH - is a leaf cutter ant in a hockey mask - our nod to the modern slasher horror. She spends much of her time using her butcher knife-like front claws doing things like cutting out paper dolls and cutting up everybody’s food for them (whether they ask her to or not).

THE COUNTESS VAMSPIDRA - is a Black Widow spider with a Bela Lugosi accent. She’s that super pushy kid, who thinks she can force others to be her friend. Deep down she’s extremely insecure, but would rather die than admit it. Like Sleeping Beauty’s evil queen and Cruella DeVille, she’s enchanted with herself and revels in her wickedness. She’s always spinning webs, both literally and figuratively, to ensnare our insect heroes and make them her thralls. She manages to take control of a few Zombees for her own evil purposes.
COUNT V - is Vamspidra’s meek, nebbishy yes-bug little brother who’s constantly at risk of getting his head bit off, literally and figuratively. Publically, he’s Countess Vamspidra’s biggest fan and supporter - her little henchman if you will. However, in his heart he always sides with Dr. B and the gang, but he doesn’t dare admit it. |
THE ZOMBEES are Countess Vamspidra’s slavish bee minions. They speak in robotic monotones and seem completely hypnotized and under her total control. However, they will quickly and comically change from “we obey” to “on second thought, we don’t obey” the moment danger threatens.
